My One Word for 2017

Do you participate in the ‘One Word’ for every New Year? If you have never heard of it, it’s simply a word that you will navigate your year around in all areas of your life in efforts to create the best year possible. I have done this for MANY years, and really enjoy it because it makes me stop and reflect. Life can get so busy and often more than not ‘busyness’ prevents clarity on what is important in life. I have found value in slowing down to think intentionally and in this post I’m going to share my One Word for 2017!

Finding Balance

Balance

My one word for this New Year is Balance. I have been able to be quite reflective the last week or so and was hit with the realization that I have pretty much been out of balance since 2009. That’s difficult to admit as a healthy living lifestyle blogger! Just keeping it real, my family and I have experienced the worst kinds of hardships since that year and clearly I lost myself between then and now. I’m a passionate person. Truly an ‘all in’ kind of woman. I love HARD and there is little I won’t do for my significant other, family, and friends — especially when ‘ish is hitting the fan’ because these are the people who matter most in my life. However, when you lose yourself in the process — something’s gotta give.

This year is all about focusing on balance — in all the areas of life — Fitness, Finance, Family, Field (career), Faith, Friends, and Fun.

Even though I’m the type of person who is ‘in it to win it’ doesn’t mean I have to run myself into the ground. I’m practicing personal boundaries and being intentional with everything I do in a more mindful way. I’m scheduling personal development, self-care, and learning how to turn work off so I can enjoy the present. After all, it is a gift.

If you are anything like me, I encourage you to reflect on ways to take care of you. Go for a walk, book that massage or facial, mani/pedi, schedule the yoga or pilates class. It doesn’t matter how busy your schedule already is because there is time — you have to make it. These self-improving things are important for our overall health and should be part of our schedule AND treated like a non-negotiable daily, weekly, bi-weekly, &/or monthly appointment.

I’m a hard worker. I know grit, and I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty. I also know what it’s like to let yourself go and it’s not pretty. It’s never too late to start. It doesn’t have to be the morning, a Monday, a new month or a new year — it can be right now.
