what are essential oils?

what are essential oils

distillation

Essential oils are that aromatic, volatile liquid that is within many shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds that is usually extracted through steam distillation. The chemistry of an essential oil is very complex and may consist of hundreds of different and unique compounds. Moreover, essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs because of the distillation process that makes them so concentrated. It requires a large volume of plant material to produce small amounts of a distilled essential oil. For example, it takes 5,000 pounds of rose petals to produce 1 kilo of rose oil.

Essential oils and plant extracts have been woven into history since the beginning of time and are considered by many to be the missing link in modern medicine. They have been used medicinally to kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses and to combat insect, bug, and snake bites in addition to treating all kinds of mysterious maladies. Oils and extracts stimulate tissue and nerve regeneration. Essential oils are not simple substances. Each oil is a complex structure of hundreds of different chemical compounds, which is why essential oils could never be patented. A single essential oil may contain anywhere from 80-300 or more different chemical constituents (Source: Essential Oils Pocket Reference Sixth Edition).

Can you just go get them out of a plant in your yard?  No… They are typically strategically extracted through a steam distillation process, but there are several methods depending on the plant!

Are they the same as vegetable and olive oils?  Nope!  Vegetable oils are obtained from the fatty parts of a plant like the nuts, seeds, or kernels.  Essential oils are usually derived from the roots, bark, flowers, leaves, resin, etc.  Vegetable oils are greasy and can go rancid over time, however,  Young Living’s essential oils do not go rancid or expire – isn’t that awesome?!  In the essential oils world, we refer to the kitchen oils (olive, coconut, avocado, grape seed, etc.) as “carrier oils” since they are often used to dilute the potency of therapeutic grade essential oils when applying to your skin.

What do they smell like?  Essential oils should smell exactly like the plant they come from – nothing more, nothing less.  Other companies add “fillers” like vanillin to make them smell sweeter.  Do your oils smell like a plant or a dessert?  If it says 100% pure but it smells sweet, chances are something else has been added and all medicinal efforts are now counterproductive.

How do you use them?  There are three ways we use Young Living essential oils.  Since Young Living’s oils are in fact 100% essential oil (pure, medicinal, therapeutic grade, nothing removed, nothing added) they are safe to use in the following three ways:

        • Aromatically: Use an essential oils diffuser, inhale directly from the bottle, or place a drop in the palms of your hands and cup over your nose.
        • Topically:  Dilute with a carrier oil or apply ‘neat’ to your skin either directly at the source of concern or on the corresponding Vita Flex point on your feet.
        • Internally:  Mix with water or use a clear vegetable capsule with a carrier oil to ingest.  NOTE: This can only be done with therapeutic grade essential oils and I ONLY trust Young Living for this method.

Are all of Young Living’s oils compatible with all three methods of use?  No.  There are a few oils that are not recommended for ingestion.  Each individual oil is labeled with the recommended uses and dilution ratio.  Be sure to read this information carefully before using an oil!

Are all brands and types of essential oils the same?  This is a big NO!  Essential oils are categorized by a grading system.  Young Living’s oils are the highest grade – 100% pure therapeutic – making them the best on the market!  Therapeutic grade oils are pure and contain all of the medicinal properties of the oil. Nothing is (or should be) added to them.  Aromatherapy grade is purely for the smell.  It is not recommended to use aromatherapy grade essential oils topically and especially not internally.  Definitely something to think twice about the next time you are browsing the aisles of your favorite health food store!

What sets Young Living apart from other companies?  The most important factor is Young Living’s Seed to Seal Quality Commitment.  I highly encourage you to read about it HERE, but there isn’t another company in the essential oil industry that can guarantee its products like Young Living. In fact, all other companies have to purchase their oils from an “oil broker”.  With over 20 years in the field, Young Living has perfected essential oils and the distillation process.  They own many of their own farms, including the largest essential oils distillery in the world.  Their quality truly speaks for itself!

Seed to Seal

Is there a way I can purchase Young Living oils without going through the company?  This is another huge NO!  There have been a number of recent reports of dishonest people selling what appear to be new, sealed bottles of Young Living essential oils.  Upon closer inspection, the oils in these bottles have been either diluted or replaced with a lesser quality oil and then resealed using a new cap.  PLEASE do not buy oils through Amazon, eBay, or other online retailers. While sites like these are fantastic places to get books etc. they are not the place to get essential oils.  You have no way of knowing if those bottles have been tampered with and it isn’t worth chancing to save a few dollars.  If you are thinking about making the investment in your family’s health by purchasing essential oils, please contact Jennifer (or someone from her team) directly. We can help guide you through the ordering process and ensure that you are receiving Young Living’s quality products straight from the source!
